Cloves are easy to overlook. They are small. Dark. Hard. And usually used only a little at a time. A few may go into a pot of mulled cider. A pinch of ground cloves may appear in gingerbread.
They can season rice, meat, sauces, chai, baked goods, and holiday desserts. Most people think of them primarily as a spice. And that is exactly what they are.
But cloves also contain compounds that scientists have studied for antimicrobial, antioxidant, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory properties.
That has helped create a long list of claims online.
Some are reasonable.
Some are preliminary.
And some go much further than the evidence allows.
So the most useful way to understand cloves is not to ask whether they are a “miracle spice.”
They are not.
The better question is this:

There is insufficient evidence to say ordinary food use causes miscarriage.
But pregnancy is not a good time to experiment with large doses of concentrated herbal extracts whose safety has not been well established.
