For most of his life as a parent, David believed he understood what fear felt like. He thought it was the sudden panic that rushed through him when he briefly lost sight of his daughter in a crowded shopping center.
He thought it was watching her climb too high at the playground or ride her bicycle down a steep hill a little faster than he preferred. Like many parents, he worried about the ordinary risks of childhood. Scraped knees, bumps on the head, and occasional accidents seemed like inevitable parts of growing up.
